“UNBURIED: Resurrecting Memory , Confronting Morality and Remembering the Africans & the Massacre on the Middle Passage”
By Chadra Pittman , Founder & Executive Director of The Sankofa Projects
Lecture 7 pm
Doors open to view the galleries 6 pm
Museum members free , non - members $5
Join the Sankofa Projects , and partners the Hampton History Museum , Fort Monroe Authority , and Fort Monroe National Park for Remembrance 2022 on Saturday , June 11 at Outlook Beach on Fort Monroe .
For nearly three decades , the foundation of Chadra Pittman’s sacred and scholarly work has been rooted in exploring the grave injustices inflicted against humanity. She resurrects memory, honors Ancestors, and gives voice to the lives and untold stories of the marginalized and Africans across the Diaspora.
As part of the Remembrance 2022 events, Pittman's lecture will address the history, meaning and significance of Remembrance Day, an international commemoration honoring those who perished in the Middle Passage, this year taking place on June 11 at Fort Monroe. In her talk Chadra takes you on a journey beginning with Africans forcibly brought across the Atlantic to contemporary issues shaped by this tragic past.
Pittman will reach back to a time before slavery took hold, and discuss current issues around race, body autonomy and the “aftermath of slavery.” She will resurrect memory through enslavement archives, confront the morality which allowed for slavery to exist, and travel from the the castles at Fort El Mina to the Contraband of Fort Monroe, from the NY African Burial Ground to Black Wall Street, to Bay Shore to the treacherous journey of the Middle Passage.
Lecture at 7 pm. Doors open at 6 pm to tour the galleries and view the special exhibit "Historic Black Beaches: Bay Shore and Other Memorable Sands."

27 years ago, I began my life’s work at the African Burial Ground National Monument giving voice to the Africans enslaved in colonial New York who were buried under Wall Street from the 1700’s.
11 years of The Sankofa ProjectsRemembrance at Buckroe Beach honoring the millions of Africans who were murdered on the Middle Passage and jumped or were thrown into the Atlantic Ocean during the Transatlantic “Slave” Trade.
Each moment has led up to this one...
Grateful...
Sacred grounds...
Truth telling...
Honoring Ancestors of the Middle Passage, the 20 and of Africans of 1619, the Veterans, all the named snd unnamed souls who have lost their lives due to racialized terror in this country and abroad with Nikole Hannah-Jones at the Fort Monroe National Monument

Thrilled to serve as the Keynote for the 44th OSCLG 2021 Conference. My lecture was "Wearing their Flesh like War: Women Worthy of Witness from the African Burial Ground to Anarcha and from Recy to Breonna Taylor" borrowing from the words of Audre Lorde and Toni Morrison for the title. After the keynote, I orchestrated the first ever OSCLG Remembrance ceremony to honor the fierce feminists and warrior women who have passed on to the Ancestral Realm.

I orchestrated the Opening Ceremony and the Calling of Names for the Ancestors for AAAM 2021 Virtual Conference. I included th specific aspects of the conference theme which were incorpoarted into the ceremony and demonstarted through the drumming the ways in which Africans across the diaspora have retained their cultural connections to Africa despite the horror of slavery. I poured libations at Buckroe Beach, Fort Monroe National Monument and Emanicipation Oak at Hampton University touching the soil in these historic and sacred sites in African American history. We poured for those who perished in the Middle Passage, those who perished due to racial violence and terror, all whom we lost due to natural causes and to those we lost due to the global pandemic. We honored the Native blood spilled on these lands to honor their Ancestral connection to Mother Earth. I also participated in a panel discussion after the Opening Ceremony to speak to the importance of these moments in history where we reflect and acknowledge why we must remember the past. For the past nearly 30 years, since my years working at the NY African Burial Ground Project, I have been committed to giving voice to those Africans who were silenced due to slavery and every other racial injustice that was inflicted upon them throughout history; Juneteenth is one of thise critical times which needs to be acknowledged and these African Ancestors need to be remembered.
I was invited to orchestrate the "Calling of the Names" for Governor Northam's Juneteenth program on June 18, 2021 at the Fort Monroe Nationsl Monument. Master Drummer Anpu Sil John Earl Robinson opened with a Drum call to begin the ceremony in honor of the Africans of Galveston, Texas. I poured a libation in honor the FIRST NATIONS, INDIGENOUS and the Africans of the Diaspora throughout history like Ota Benga and Mary Turner who was lynched in 1918 as well as the contemporary losses we have endured like Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and Amadou Diallo.

Ancestor Nina Simone said that, “the responsibility of an artist is to use their platform to reflect the times.”
During this fight for the the preservation of black and brown lives, lives which have been killed with impunity, my hope is that we each find a way to use our voices for change. Some will take it to the streets, some will march, some will write books, create music or work to change legislation—we each must use our art to sound the alarm that racism and injustice will no longer be tolerated. Movements are happening across the world to acknowledge the brutality that has been imposed on black and brown bodies for hundreds of years.
Thank you to my dear and talented brother Clarence Gabriel who has chosen to create a photo movement called...”#ijustwanttolive”. He asked me to finish this statement “I just want to live to...” and here was my response...
“I just want to raise my children in a world that is safe, intolerant of injustice, where the -isms and the -phobias no longer exist, where their humanity is acknowledged & their blackness is not feared but revered.”- Chadra Pittman
Thank you Clarence for using your platform in such a powerful way. I am sure Ancestor Nina is proud of you beloved!!! I love you my brother!

Dear White America,
We are in the midst of a pandemic and a fight against racial injustice in America and all over the world. This is a time like we’ve never seen before.
African descended people aka Black parents have spent generations upon generations talking to our children about the reality of racism and the myriad of inequities that have plagued our collective lives.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-roFJ9oKypv8/Xtetd7wEcgI/AAAAAAABHs4/kbB_DzelbaImkFQq1Usy3WOte2ivO0m-gCPcBGAYYCw/s1600/ABD2EB14-AB76-4571-89B8-6731EC3AB4E4.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-roFJ9oKypv8/Xtetd7wEcgI/AAAAAAABHs4/kbB_DzelbaImkFQq1Usy3WOte2ivO0m-gCPcBGAYYCw/s320/ABD2EB14-AB76-4571-89B8-6731EC3AB4E4.jpeg" width="320" height="316" data-original-width="750" data-original-height="741" /></a></div>

Now it’s your turn...
European American parents...
White parents...
Parents of white children...
White America...
You need to talk to your children IMMEDIATELY!!!!
The lack of empathy for a life lost is horrifyingly despicable!!! Seeing images on line with your children mimicking George Floyd’s death and showing their lack of compassion speaks volumes. The names have been blurred bc they are children and faces distorted bc they are children.

I implore you to:
1. Sit them down and educate yourselves and them on the truth about American history, the genocide of Native Americans and the brutal enslavement of Africans.
2. If you are one who believes America is great, well then kindly remind your children that America wouldn’t be so “great” without hundreds of years of free labor by Africans!
3. If you are unable to teach them or yourselves, sign up for an African American history course, visit a Black museum, watch some documentaries on The Burning of Black Wall Street, redlining & institutional systemic racism or attend a lecture to become more informed.
This utter ignorance, racism and lack of compassion by these children is a huge problem and they didn’t get this way by themselves. Teach them that white supremacy exists, that it is wrong and that they don’t have to fall prey to that ideology. Teach them to respect all humans and creatures on this Earth and to be good custodian of the planet. Teach them that their skin is of no more value than anyone else’s. The truth is that someone taught them that there is privilege in the pigmentation of their skin color, that this horrific behavior was ok or allowed racism to be spoken in your homes and communities.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LkB_QJCsjcM/WZSSfKPcMVI/AAAAAAAAKX0/oDvizA9kLgc_qmUG3f-WBtLSYv6bynTYACPcBGAYYCw/s1600/children.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LkB_QJCsjcM/WZSSfKPcMVI/AAAAAAAAKX0/oDvizA9kLgc_qmUG3f-WBtLSYv6bynTYACPcBGAYYCw/s320/children.jpg" width="213" height="320" data-original-width="559" data-original-height="839" /></a></div>
Clearly, America and the world has a “race problem”; W.E.B. DuBois said that in The Soul of Black Folk in 1903. The only way we can eradicate racism is if we each do our part & confront it without hesitation!
My white comrades and parents, WE need you to do your part!!! THE children, all of our children need us to get this right!!!! The collective future of us ALL is depending on it!!!
Thank you!
A human being with African and Native roots, Warrior Mother, Intersectional feminist and proud aunt to many wonderful children.

While history proves and let the records show that:
1. the enslavement of human beings was global
2. many ethnic groups/cultures of people suffered at the hands of those in power
3. “slavery”was also not specific to Africans, I am sure her reference to “slavery” is ethnocentric in nature and is referring to what occurred to Africans here in the USA. (Refer to number 1)
That having been said...you can feel
however you want to about the stay at home order but when you compare a month to 6 week government imposed lockdown for your safety to over 400 years of a brutal enslavement, an international trade and kidnapping, amputations, castrations, torture, rape, lynching of human beings, the drowning of millions of my Ancestors in the Middle Passage...you have gone too damn far!!!!!!
We have seen the blatant racism and heightened xenophobia before and since this pandemic surfaced. The arrogance and ignorance of these Americans is embarrassing.
This is why African American history NEEDS to be a part of American History curriculum not just reserved for February.

Personally, I have no interest in testing people’s loyalties. People whom I identify as my comrades/my people/my tribe are just that and their loyalty has NEVER had to be tested. Reciprocity is important to me in my relationships. I come from a tribe where we show up for one another without question!!!
The reality is nothing is as it was and we are all adjusting to a new normal so I will use this time to give people grace and space. If that person is important enough to you, then maybe a conversation is warranted to check in if you haven’t heard from them. Now is not the time to play the waiting “game” to see who will call first.
The reality is if folks were unavailable, fair weathered aka “raggedy” with their communication and friendship then most likely they will remain that way during a pandemic. If they have shown you that they support you, you will know that also. People have always shown us EXACTLY who they are. We are the ones who make excuses for them then we act surprised and are disappointed and hurt when they don’t show up. The onus is on us to pay attention to people’s behavior. Ancestor Maya Angelou said that “when people show you who they are, believe them...the FIRST time.”
Right now, humans need to focus on our individual and collective health, our human and animal community, the Earth and her creatures, our spiritual and physical and mental wellness and pray/light sage/mediate/whatever you do to seek peace and balance, fight for the safety of our first responders that they get what they need and put our efforts and energy that we as a humanity and our whole world heal from this.
Thanks for this post James DeVille.
Blessings brother and wishing you all wellness and peace of mind and spirit beloveds!!!!

I was invited by the most wonderful human being, former teacher of my children, who became my friend Mrs. Aimee Cawley Ryder to come to Aberdeen Elementary School in Hampton to give a presentation to her class. I used to volunteer in her classroom at Luther W. Machen Elementary School and she was an incredible teacher. We’ve kept in touch over the years and she asked if I would come to her class and speak with her students. Of course I said yes... I was honored to do so.
I talked with them about the field of Anthropology and my work at the African Burial Ground National Monument, brought African artifacts for them to hold from Ethiopia, Ghana, Senegal and instruments for them to play and we discussed world geography locating African countries on the map while listening to South African Queen Mother Miriam Makeba.
I’ve been teaching for almost 35 years now from 3rd grade to college classes and senior groups from church groups to those who are incarcerated. Every time I teach, I am reminded of the joy I feel giving back...and with the youth, telling them how special they each are and reminding them of the great culture and civilization they come from.
Thank you my dear friend for inviting me to spend time with your class and thank you for the handmade gift and card from the students which I will treasure.

On Saturday, April 20, 2019 at 11:00am, the Norfolk Botanical Garden (NBG) honored the 200 African American women and 20 African American men who literally broke ground, cut down trees, cleared what was a swamp land and warded off snakes to create the beautiful Norfolk Botanical Gardens. They worked year round, through the harsh winters and unbearably hot summers so they could plant the beautiful azaleas which we enjoy today. After the Garden was complete, these 220 African Americans were not allowed to visit the garden and enjoy the beauty they created because of the racist laws of Jim Crow segregation.

11 years ago, the NBG decided that they would honor these people, referred to as Ground breakers, who are now all Ancestors. Annually, they have a ceremony and bring the families of those Groundbreakers together to honor what these 220 people gave to the city of Norfolk. This has been an untold story of the history of Norfolk and of the Garden which the NBG does not want to be buried any longer.

The story of the Gardner's moved me as many of you know my Anthropologicial work began with a literal groundbreaking that unearthed 419 Africans excavated from a 17th century African Burial Ground in NY. The bones of these enslaved Africans remained hidden under the streets of lower Manthattan for centuries. My job as a Public Educator and Media Coordinator was to educate the public about this untold history of these Africans in colonial New York. My sacred and scholarly work for the past nearly 30 has been centered around excavating history, honoring Ancestors, giving voice to the untold stories like the Africans in Colonial NY and through my work with Remembrance, honoring the millions of Africans who perished during the Middle Passage and ensuring that the historical record reflects these narratives and their contributions. Anually, we remember these Africans and restore their humanity through Remembrance. We walk around our "Tree of Remembrance" as a part of the ceremony because we have not forgotten our roots, our history, culture nor these beloved Ancestors. Members of Sankofa and the community embraced Remembrance in 2012 and give their time and talents to honor our Ancestors...annually we gather at Buckroe Beach to remember them. So grateful for those whom this story has touched and who support these works to honor these Ancestors. (please join us for our 8th Annual Remembrance Saturday, June 8, 2019 at 11am...for more information visit www.thesankofaprojects.blogspot.com
For 8 years now, I have lectured across the United States on this work of Remembrance and I create Remembrance ceremonies which honor people, the famous and the forgotten, historic & sacred places which hold memory of what happened there and critical time periods in history which continue to shape and influence our lives today.
I am beyond honored to share that I have been chosen by the Norfolk Botanical Gardens as a 2019 Recipient of the Groundbreakers Award for my work with The Sankofa Projects, Remembrance, and 4 E.V.E.R.

Education, Activism, Community Engagement and Social Justice are the cornerstsones of my orgznizations and life's work. Through our programs, we challenge hegemony and strive to eradicate oppression in all it's forms.
I was invited to give a lecture at Christopher Newport University for a Feminist class being taught by Dr. Danielle Stern; I was thrilled to do so as I am always excited to engage with students.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GI2SiCvmozc/XCeWaUqw4tI/AAAAAAAA01Q/2SfOf9uAIIYlw9O9HBnxmC5fo1xsb6rMQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_20181229_084440_516.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GI2SiCvmozc/XCeWaUqw4tI/AAAAAAAA01Q/2SfOf9uAIIYlw9O9HBnxmC5fo1xsb6rMQCLcBGAs/s400/IMG_20181229_084440_516.jpg" width="400" height="400" data-original-width="1080" data-original-height="1080" /></a></div>
In the spirit of Sankofa, which teaches us to reach back and fetch it, I took the class on a journey through time. We visited critical moments in history which have shaped the lives and laws of this land. We explored ageism, sexism, homophobia, racism, heterosexism, classism, misogyny, patriarchy, ableism and I challenged the relevance and lack thereof of these "cultural norms." I spoke of the necessity of intersectionality and the importance of acknowleding our shared humanity. We explored the ways women and some men fight for social justice. In this current political climate which seems to embrace, coddle and excuse rampant xenophobia, we moved beyond the borders of the United States and investigated how and if culture shapes the lives and work of international activists. We explored the various forms of oppression and how "othering", patriarchy and privilege contribute to a feminism which is racist and exclusionary. We uncovered common threads in our humanity that bind us to one another in our collective pursuit of justice while acknowledging the battles won and risks associated with being an activist. It is imperative that I introduce these students to the names and faces of scholars, activists and game changers who often are invisible in mainstream educational systems like Audre Lorde and others who paved the way.

It was an absolute joy to meet this dynamic group of budding scholars who were engaged, outspoken and excited about their roles in this world and our collective future. I am so grateful that in a political climate and world which seems crazed, unjust and xenophobic that these students have professors like Dr. Stern who are courageous enough to tackle difficult conversations and are willing to work towards understanding.
When the lecture ended, I spoke with many students about their class projects and they shared their dreams for their futures. I left feeling inspired by these students and parted from them sharing one of my favorite quotes by Sir James Baldwin, "The world is before you and you need not take it or leave it as it was when you came in." I want the youth to always know they can make a difference in this world.
Thank you again my friend... for inviting me to your class and for providing this space for me to share this work that I am engaged in with this next generation. I am optimistic that they will take this world by storm, do great things and leave the world better than they inherited it! Hopeful...and grateful...sincere thanks Danielle!!! ☮🕉👊🏾👊🏾♀️🌈🖤🌏

I watched earlier this week, a large crowd of "white" people in Pittsburgh kneel and turn their back on 45 bc he hasn't denounced white nationalism = Using your privilege to denounce hatred. Thank you.
I heard on NPR that a "black" Baptist minister was going to have Shabat tonight in honor of the 11 Jewish people murdered in Pittsburgh = Kindness extended. Thank you.
The Muslim community raised $ for those affected in the Jewish massacre = Compassion extended. Thank you.
The Baptist minister said when that when Michael Brown was killed, that the Rabbi and members of the Synogague she is visiting this evening came to her church to offer condolences and to pray with the family of Brown = one hand Washes the other. Thank you.
In the midst of the inconceivable insanity in the world, moments like these, if just for a moment restore my hope in humanity.

"Creating safe spaces where the community can meet across our differences, exchange ideas and turn ideas into action, where the voices of the vulnerable and marginalized can be heard and are valued, where equity is the aim and privilege is examined and the intersections of what makes us human are explored is central to the work of my two organizations, The Sankofa Projects and 4 E.V.E.R. (End Violence End Rape in the 4 Directions of the Earth). The overarching theme of my life's work is rooted in social justice, working to obliterate all forms of oppression, and educating on the importance and necessity of acknowledging our shared humanity." ~ Chadra Pittman Walke

I was invited by Lateisha Handie, Executive Director of the Citizens' Unity Commission to present a lecture on Social Justice, Equity and Equality and I was thrilled to do so. I explored Racism, Sexism, Homophobia, Heterosexism, Ableism, Ageism, Transphobia, Equality vs Equity and reinforced the need for Intersectionality incorporating the works of Ancestors Audre Lorde and James Baldwin into the discussion while confronting and examining privilege.

The room was filled with a diverse group of people who were interested in learning about social justice, how vital it is to think broadly and beyond our privilege and being cognizant of what happens when social justice is absent. We must create inclusive, welcoming environments where we all have a seat at the table, where we all have a voice and where we all have the ability to succeed.

Thrilled for The Sankofa Projects and 4 E.V.E.R to have partnered with the Citizens' Unity Commission on this initiative and look forward to doing more together in the future. Programs like this, which are rooted in education, building awareness across the Hampton Roads communities and affecting change, make it easy to see why you should #ChooseHampton.

I think about her and all the other African women and how unbearable it must've been to be forced to bare their breasts and feed the children of those who were enslaving them; to give her milk while her own child lay hungry. I think about how much Africans sacrificed for this land we call America. She and the countless of other Africans who were enslaved on this day in 1776, I REMEMBER them! These are my beloved Ancestors.
I would ask the next time you frown upon someone who chooses not to stand for the Pledge or sing the National Anthem and accuse them of being non patriotic---remember her. Her breasts FED this nation. She and those who like her were prohibited by law to drink from "White Only" water fountains yet white infants children could suckle on these black breasts? The irony of it all!!! I ask you, what is MORE patriotic than feeding the Nation?
America gained its independence yet not everyone was free. Africans would remain enslaved for another 89 years after America gained her freedom and still, questioning this notion if freedom in a land that has historically condemned Blackness and otherness.
As HUMANS, if we ever hope to move forward toward, and attempt to heal from the horrors of this past--we MUST engage in honest conversations about THE TRUTH, the horror which was imposed on our fellow humans, the decimation and genocide of Native First Nations people, the trade of millions of African beings, the millions of lives lost in the Middle Passage, the misogyny and disrespect and rape of women, the racism, sexism, the disregard for GNC folk, the abuse of children, the neglect of the homeless and the elderly.
We, HUMANS, have a shared history yet we must acknowledge that our experiences to this land are as vast as the ocean.
I am not obliged to celebrate the 4th of July, stand for the pledge nor sing the anthem. My experience to these supposed "national treasures" is different than others and to disregard the difference speaks to your denial of my individual experiences and history.
I believe we can move forward towards recognizing our shared humanity but you must see me; the painful parts and the beautiful parts. You must have the courage to face the past and it's crimes against humanity.
I'm willing to try...are you?
